If you woke up in the middle of the night and noticed smoke coming from the roof of your neighbor's house, would you get involved and wake them up? Sounds like a stupid question - right?
The reason I asked that question comes from statistics provided by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence:
  • An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year.
  • There are 16,800 homicides and $2.2 million (medically treated) injuries due to intimate partner violence annually, which costs $37 billion.
  • 30% to 60% of perpetrators of intimate partner violence also abuse children in the household.
  • Most cases of domestic violence are never reported to the police.
Here is a quote from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
"The number of violent deaths tells only part of the story. Many more survive violence and are left with permanent physical and emotional scars. Violence also erodes communities by reducing productivity, decreasing property values, and CDC is committed to stopping violence before it begins."
My name is Ken Bradford and this blog is designed to promote education and public awareness on domestic violence. Domestic violence became very real to me a few years ago. I was contacted by a close friend, who asked me for help. I tried to do everything I could to help her during a very difficult time, but it seemed that everything I did was wrong. I had heard of domestic violence, but I really didn't know what it was and how it impacted peoples' lives. I failed in my efforts to help my friend and she eventually returned to an abusive relationship. Please take the time to read - "Personal Perspective of Domestic Violence".

Domestic violence is our problem. It is not a private matter. There are women and children in your own community who are living each day of their lives in fear. You have said "Good Morning" to a woman who is in a violent relationship where you work. You more than likely have had a cup of coffee, attended church, or attended a business meeting with someone who is beating or otherwise abusing his spouse or partner. The house is on fire! It's the middle of the night and it's time to wake them up!

If enough people speak loud enough, someone will listen and I pray that the tragedy of domestic violence will become something that once occurred in our society.

If you are a business owner and aren't really involved in any causes or campaigns in your community, why not support domestic violence education and awareness? I will help in any way I can.

If you think it's time to get involved, you can contact me through our main site. Also, please join me on LinkedIn and Google+.
