Extra family court judges will 'change lives,' officials say

(Newser) – Soccer star Hope Solo is involved in another domestic violence case, but this time as the one facing charges. Police say the 32-year-old hit her sister and her nephew last night during an "out-of-control" party at Solo's home in the Seattle suburb of Kirkland, reports the Seattle Times. "There were visible injuries on them,” says a police official. The two-time Olympic gold medalist (and Dancing With the Stars vet) was being held without bail on two counts of investigation of domestic violence assault.

Some 25 new family court judge positions will be added statewide to help alleviate a case backlog and ensure justice for families, children and domestic violence victims who use the system, lawmakers said.  Both Dutchess and Ulster counties will get one additional judge. "The extra seat in our county will make a world of difference and change the lives of so many individuals," said Ulster County Family Court Judge Anthony McGinty.
The bill was cosponsored by Assemblyman Kevin Cahill, D-Kingston, State Sen. Terry Gipson, D-Rhinebeck, Assemblywoman Didi Barrett, D-Red Hook, and Assemblyman Frank Skartados, D-Milton.
